Vodafone Expresses Deep Interest in the Apple iPad

Apple-iPadWho would not?

The Apple iPad is probably the single greatest innovation in the field of information access. This single device is more than just a mobile phone and net book hybrid, it is the gadget that would change the way we access and send information. So far, the iPad is the only device that could radically reinvent the way we look at our newspapers and magazines (simply imagine the dentist’s office with a few iPads in the waiting area instead of a stock of outdated furniture magazines).

Of course, since the iPad will come in a 3G variant, it is only natural that Apple be looking for network operators who can offer the device. While it has not been decided that Vodafone would actually offer the device when it launches, Vodafone chief executive Vittorio Colao expressed that he was very interested in the iPad (as a response to the unveiling of the device by Steve Jobs).

Performance wise, many people are expecting the iPad to further put a strain on existing 3G networks. With the phone primarily using WiFi and 3G as its means of connecting to the internet, it is expected that bandwidths will be pushed to their limits. So far Vodafone has a distinct advantage. The company only started to offer the iPhone recently, placing the number of iPhone users to a very manageable number –as compared to the over 2 million subscribers for O2’s network.

While people have been shifting from O2 to Vodafone, the number of 3G users on the Vodafone network is still small. With Vodafone’s updates on their 3G signals already in place (during last year, as they prepared for the coming of the iPhone).
