The Big Brother: The Samsung Wave 2 Pro

August 26th, 2010

The Samsung Wave 2 Pro is obviously, the bigger brother of the Wave 2. Although at first glance, these two Smartphones may look exactly alike, the primary difference between the two is that the Wave 2 Pro offers a built-in QWERTY keyboard which slides out from the side. Other than this, the two are almost exactly alike – fairly priced Smartphones that deliver the functions that you need.

Good Business

As the name implies, the Samsung Wave 2 Pro is a Smartphone that caters to the more professional users. Testament to this fact is the full QWERTY keyboard on the device which is an absence in its younger brother. The addition of this key feature means that it will be easier for users to compose longer messages using the device. This makes it more email-friendly as it allows users to bring their work with them while they’re on the go.

The QWERTY pad slides out from the side of the device and you’ll have to rely on the accelerometer censor to facilitate the auto-rotate function on the Smartphone so that you can use it on landscape mode.

Adding Some Fun in Functional

The Samsung Wave 2 Pro isn’t all about serious business. It also sports a number of features that makes the device enjoyable as well. For starters, there’s a very user friendly multimedia player on board the device which is compatible with most file formats of today.

If you get tired of listening to your stored tunes then you can very easily switch on the FM radio. If you hear a song that you like, you can make use of the FM recording feature of the Samsung Wave 2 Pro and add this new tune to your growing playlist.

This Smartphone is also equipped with a 3.15 MP camera which you can use to capture candid moments wherever you go.

The recently released Samsung Galaxy S i9000 packs in the most advanced mobile phone technology in a handsomely-designed handset. Superbly engineered to carry a bevy of hefty features in its 118 gm, 9.9 mm thin frame, it boasts a big capacitive touchscreen, a 5 MP camera, up to 32 GB of storage, and fast 3G access.

Visual real estate

Users overlook the Samsung Galaxy S as being slightly larger than most touchscreen phones, knowing that it is merely a fair trade-off for a bigger, more advanced display. The phone comes with a generous 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen with a 16 million colour display at 480x 800 pixels resolution. This bigger piece of visual real estate means less eyestrain when reading emails and more enjoyment when watching videos, viewing images and playing games.

Other screen advantages

A bigger screen on the Samsung Galaxy S also means a more dynamic and easier way to navigate the phone’s TouchWiz 3.0 user interface. The screen comes with an accelerometer which automatically rotates the UI to adapt to the phone’s orientation, whether in portrait of landscape mode. The user interface has touch-sensitive controls, a proximity sensor for automatic device shutdown, and responds to multi-touch input method.

Simple touch navigation

Creating documents and composing emails on the Samsung Galaxy S touchscreen just became easier with the inclusion of the Swype text input which enables intuitive typing on the display’s virtual QWERTY keyboard. There’s no more need to wade through a confusion of menus as the TouchWiz UI provides multiple home screens which allows users to quickly access their desired file with a mere swipe of a finger.

Audio and visual entertainment on the go is just a finger swipe away. The i9000 comes with a versatile media player which is instantly accessible on the home screen. The player enables the user to play back both music and video files with stunning clarity using simple touch navigation.

Samsung S5620 Monte – Social Networking for the New Age

February 24th, 2010

Samsung MonteThe new Samsung S5620 Monte is, on first examining, an extremely good device for those heavily into social networking, and seems to be a natural progression from the company’s earlier Genio incarnations. Similarly to these earlier devices Samsung’s Monte is bright and vibrant, which is certain to appeal to younger, trendier users looking for a flashing piece of tech and affords rapid, pain-free access to all of the most popular social networking sites like Facebook and Bebo. To further mark the Monte’s progression from the earlier Genio range it now comes complete with Wi-Fi support, affording the user even more online connectivity to friends and networks.

The screen itself is an excellent combination of easy navigation and sharp, vibrant colours packaged into a 3-inch TFT display. The 240X400 WQVGA resolution is extremely detailed and displays 246k colours. The touchscreen itself is also powered by TouchWiz 2.0 Plus, Samsung’s up-to-date version of their touchscreen operating system, though the most recent models are enhanced from their previous incarnations. The screen itself is very responsive and the high resolution and 16:9 ratio makes it an excellent device on which to watch widescreen videos. The integral accelerometer as well allows the user to turn the phone from landscape to portrait mode rapidly with no problems.

Samsung S5620 Monte (4)The Monte’s media player supports all of the leading video and music formats and comes complete with a stereo FM radio with RDS. It also features a 3.5mm jack where the user can plug their own headphones into the device and a YouTube application for easy viewing in addition to being able to stream video content from various other online sources. The useful 227MB of storage space is handy for saving your music, though you may want to upgrade to 16 GB using a microSD card (highly recommend if you’re into a lot of stored media). The phone also has an integral 3.2 megapixel camera with several useful features, although unfortunately, it does not feature a flash and this minor oversight will certainly limit those photo-ops to daylight hours. It does, however, come with face and smile detection, and can also record QVGA video. There is also a great secondary camera on the front of the device which can be used for video calling – a great feature for those who enjoy utilising this 3G feature.

Samsung S5620 Monte (1)Due to the fact that the Monte is hardwired for social networking it is a joy to seamlessly upload pictures and videos to your main online sites in order to rapidly share them with friends and family. The phone’s integral apps afford quick access to such sites as Twitter and Facebook. Your social networking information can also be conveniently synchronised and attached to the contacts in your phone address book, too, saving tedious manual work and time.

The device is fully supported for MMS and SMS, as well as instant messaging. It utilises Parlingo IM, a very useful tool that is able to find your contacts across a variety of IM services making synchronised access and usage easy. The Monte also has excellent e-mail support, utilising push e-mail which, very conveniently, lets you know on your homescreen when your e-mail account receives a new e-mail – excellent for those needed to be kept constantly in the social and professional loop.

Overall the Samsung Monte is a really outstanding device for those who require to be linked at the hip to all things social networking. Its bright and dynamic colours and sharp design with further enhance its appeal to a young and e-savvy generation always on the cyber-go. Connectivity is excellent, and the extremely user-friendly handset allows fast and pain-free access to all applications. The inclusion of Wi-Fi is another excellent benefit for those demanding fully coverage and access.

Divas, This Phone Is For You!

December 18th, 2009

Samsung S7070 and S5150Samsung is making sure that women can feel a little more like a diva, if they desire to, in 2010. The mobile phone giant is adding two new products to their ever growing list of offerings, the S7070 and the S5150. Both are mobile phones aimed at female users. The Diva product line is decidingly feminine, from the design of both phones, to the specialty features offered.

The Samsung S5150 Diva is a clamshell, flip phone. Its cover is embossed and the case, luminous and shiny. The outside of the phone has a raised, quilted pattern.

Besides phoning capabilities, the Olivia also has a 3 megapixel camera. Photographs taken with the camera can be retouched, to create more dramatic and unique pictures, just right for the diva. The “Lomo Effect” feature makes this possible. The S5150 also has a 2.2 primary, display screen. The secondary screen is a bit smaller and displays the time, the date and battery strength.

Other cool features include ‘fake call,’ ‘wish list’ and ‘etiquette mode.’ The ‘fake call’ feature is designed to help ladies get themselves out of awkward and perhaps even dangerous situations. Many women have had the experience of being out on a bad date, wishing that someone would call and give them an excuse to bow out graciously, well the S5150 has made it possible.

The ‘wish list’ is a feature which allows individuals to make lists. This might come in handy when planning shopping excursions. The etiquette mode makes it possible for users to quickly silence their phones. Each of these options can make life a bit more convenient and may appeal to women.  Besides these, however, there isn’t much difference between this phone and many others on the market in its price range. However, if a woman is in the market for the phone, why not buy one that is a little bit fancy and some cool features aimed especially for her?

Samsung Blue Earth for the Eco Friendly

December 1st, 2009

Samsung S7550 Blue EarthUnique features never fail to make anything stand out.  Samsung know that well enough to come out with a smartphone that’s not only competently specified, but has the eco-friendly touch that makes it stand-out in the crowd.  First time we saw it at CTIA last April, it didn’t really capture our imagination until now.  This is not the first “green” handset form the South Korean mobile phone maverick. It has the Samsung Reclaim before and now, its Samsung Blue Earth inherits many of that eco-friendliness.

Earth Saving Features

Like Reclaim, the Blue Earth is made from recycled materials, like the plastic of discarded water bottles.  Samsung goes further stripping the plastic from harmful compounds like PVC and putting solar cells at the back cover so you can get a few hours of talk time as solar power charges its battery.  You still get a standard battery charger though and it’s green as well, with a 5-star efficiency power rating so it eats only 0.03 watts of power when idle.

Standard Smartphone Features

It is one of the smallest touchscreen handsets but at 4.2 ounces, it’s heavy enough to feel solid in your hands. It’s a GSM/UMTS phone so you benefit from its 3G/HSPA data connectivity for fast internet surfing.  Its 3” touchscreen display could have been better at 3.25” considering its three-page homescreen.  We wonder why Samsung omitted a virtual QWERTY on that display so you will have to contend with a virtual alphanumeric keypad to enter text. It has the usual WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR as well as A2DP for wireless headphones. You also get a decent 3.2 megapixel camera with flash.  Internal memory is tops at 180 MB but you get microSD supports for up to 16 GB.

Verdict

The Samsung Blue Earth has had a lot of hands-on reviews elsewhere gut suffice it to say that it’s a very capable handset alright.  Performance on the AT&T service is decent and should be no different in Europe which is expected to carry a €300 SIM-free price tag. Not bad for a full-featured smartphone that may need some practice to use and eco-friendly besides.

Samsung i5700 Galaxy Lite to be Renamed

November 13th, 2009

Samsung Galaxy Lite i5700Rumors are saying that the Samsung i5700 Galaxy Lite which has been announced since last September will be using a different name when it finally launches next year. The news came out around the same time Samsung said they will no longer be having the November 2009 release of the device. Pretty bad marketing tactics for Samsung as two major competitors of the device have also started to take their share of the spotlight. In fact, with so many Android devices coming out this year, it is surprising that Samsung has opted to push back the launch date.

Several Samsung i5700 reviews are coming out lately with new information regarding the device, particularly about the supposed name change. Reports are saying that the new name will be Galaxy Spica. It seems like a fitting and catchy name for the device, but with the general public already familiar with the name Galaxy Lite, they might be releasing new ads and releases to make the new name better known.

The Specs

Several details may have changed regarding the name and release date, but Galaxy Lite specifications have not changed since the device was first introduced. It has been finally confirmed however, that instead of the TouchWiz interface, the Lite, or Spica, will be using the Google Android version 1.5 Cupcake. Aside from that, everything else is as is, from the 3 inch AMOLED touch screen to the 3.2 mega pixel camera. The Lite will also have 1 GB of internal storage, WiFi, 3G HSDPA, GPRS and EDGE support. As a 3G phone, it will naturally have quad band support.

Availability

Since the announcement that the device will be delayed to next year, local carriers have yet to finalize Samsung Galaxy Lite contracts. Still, expect this device to be made available for free on most plans.

Samsung is Saving the Earth

November 11th, 2009

Samsung S7550 Blue EarthI am not a fan of Samsung, but I do appreciate the phones they made for the Vodafone 360 and their Omnia is pretty impressive spec-wise. Still, most of their designs strike me as bland and their technological direction has always been more of the same thing that other companies have been doing. Their success mostly relies on doing what has been tried and tested instead of pushing the limits further.

Looking at their Genio series, you cannot help but think that they are taking too many cues from HTC and BlackBerry. Still, there are days when I see that Samsung can really make a great decision regarding a phone and push through with it. After all, they are the first company I know of that has developed a truly green mobile phone.

The Samsung Blue Earth will not save endangered animals nor will it cleanse oil spills, but it is a good step towards a better future by reducing both the carbon emission of its manufacturing process and by using recycled materials in the phone itself. The device even has a fully dedicated set of solar panels on the back for charging. Lay it out on the sun for 14 hours and you have got a full charge that is worth 4 hours of continuous talk time. If you are out in the sun while talking, you can probably extend the duration for about an hour more.

Right now, Blue Earth’s materials and production processes are still unique for this model. While others may convey their support by demanding more mobile devices like the Blue Earth, that is not what we should ask for. Instead, we should ask that all phone manufacturers follows the Blue Earth’s standards in design and production in order to  produce devices that are eco-friendly.

Samsung i5700 Galaxy Lite – Samsung Finally Adopts the Android Platform

October 16th, 2009

Samsung Galaxy Lite i5700As various mobile phone manufacturers are slowly moving towards the Android platform with the growing popularity of the operating system developed by Google, Samsung has also made its debut with the release of Samsung Galaxy i7500. Samsung seeks to even strengthen its grip on this dimension of the mobile telecommunications as it announces a second phone with the Android operating system called Samsung i5700 Galaxy Lite. However, don’t expect it to be released any time before the year 2010 starts. Like the Samsung i7500, the i5700 Galaxy Lite features a 3.2” AMOLED touch screen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and 24 bit color. The phone is fuelled by a Li-ion 1500 mAh battery.

Samsung i5700 features network connectivity modes like GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, HSUPA and GSM. The phone will also feature support to Wi-Fi connectivity like the Samsung i7500. A noticeable difference between both the phones is the fact that Samsung i5700 features a 3.2 mega pixel camera as compared to the 5.0 mega pixel camera that is featured in the Samsung i7500. This factor, added by the lower 200 MB internal memory of Samsung i5700 as compared to the 8GB internal memory of Samsung i7500, gives you the impression that Samsung i5700 will surely be the cheaper version of the i7500.

As the phone is equipped with the Android feature, it obviously comes with all its benefits, including the Google Chrome browser, Gmail, Google Talk, Google search, maps, calendar, Android market and other information services. Other features of the phone include Bluetooth, USB, GPS, voice recording, speakerphone, 3.5 mm headphone jack and multimedia playback with support to file formats such as MP3, WMA and MPEG-4.

Samsung i5700 will help strengthen Samsung’s grip on the market of Android mobiles, especially if it lies in a relatively affordable price range but will also be available on Samsung i5700 Galaxy Lite contract as well.

Samsung Introduces Two New Smartphones Including Genio TXT

October 15th, 2009

Samsung Genio TXTSamsung has announced two new smartphones in the Genio series, TXT and PRO. The phones will be made available in UK and the rest of the Europe later in the same year. Both the phones are touch screen and are designed to address the needs of the contemporary mobile phone users, especially the younger demographical section of the market. Of the sets, Genio Pro is an attractive touch screen design with a slider keypad, targeted at young business professionals. Both the phones has applications that focus significantly on social networking features.

But let us focus on the Genio TXT, which was explained to be designed to cater for the needs of users who heavily rely on text and instant messaging. The handset keeps the tradition of the Genio or “Corby” (outside the UK) series of attractive curvy designs, but the Genio TXT is unique as it features a keypad on the front of the phone, unlike its predecessor Genio Touch, and its sister release, Genio Pro. Genio TXT is suitable for users who want to buy a convenient phone on a budget, just like Genio Touch. But apart from that, the phone is also convenient when it comes to its size and weight, just like Genio Touch and weighs only 94 grams and is only 9 mm or 0.35 inches thick. This makes it a very appropriate choice of the two newly announced phones for users who don’t like heavy and thick sets. Since Genio Pro has a slider keyboard, it is thicker and heavier than Genio TXT, weighing 135 grams.

However, the price the users have to pay for its convenient dimensions is loss in the size of the display screen due to the presence of a large keypad under the 2.2” TFT touch screen with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels, which is lower than both Touch and Pro. Apart from that Genio TXT features a 2.0 mega pixel camera, 40 MB internal memory and a 3.5 mm audio jack, unlike Genio Touch. To get your hands on this phone be sure to take a look at the options available for the Samsung Genio TXT on contract.
