The Green Approach to Mobile Phone Technology

June 11th, 2010

It is hard to deny that mobile phones –especially smart phones, are some of the most convenient electronic devices ever to be made. These handsets allows users to make calls and messages instantly to friends and family, it can access the internet, provide entertainment through music and videos, be used as a camera and more. Our society is now heavily reliant on the use of mobile phone technology.

As one might expect, this convenience comes with a price. Aside from the usual retail tags and monthly tariffs, our society gets billed with a huge carbon load –which the environment pays for.

This is why there is now a growing need for people to be more aware and responsible for their carbon footprint. And starting with changing one’s mobile phone habits is a great first step.

What people should realize is that as end users and consumers, society has the ability to dictate and decide what companies will manufacture and sell. By choosing to support eco-friendly companies and by buying green products –manufacturers can be swayed to change their approach. Nokia and Sony Ericsson have been heavily promoting their green-solutions internally with reduced packaging and better choices of raw materials. Choosing to buy handsets made out of recycled plastics will encourage other companies to do the same.

It does not end with choosing a phone either. Users have the responsibility to ensure that devices are used wisely. A smart phone can consume about a metric ton of carbon in a single year (energy wise), so ensuring that a battery charge is spent properly, and avoiding over-charging are also important steps.

Lastly, support your local recycling drives. Many companies such as Orange UK hold phone recycling programs in order to encourage people to dispose of their handsets wisely –more often than not, they also offer incentives to people who recycle.

Nokia 6760 Slide- An ideal smartphone

August 28th, 2009

Nokia-6760-Slide_42329_1The Nokia 6760 Slide is one of the new phones to be launched by Nokia this year. The 3.2 MP camera comes with a decent flash which allows you to capture photos in the night as well as during the day. The layout of the Nokia 6760 Slide is pretty basic, as the front of the phone has a 2.4 inch TFT display which can display images with up to 16 million colors. The 320 x 240 pixel resolution is also decent enough to be used to view your media on. The display makes the phone stand out in terms of appearance as it can be placed vertically over the horizontal section of the phone making the phone look quite eccentric! If you can adjust to this style easily, then the phone will be a pleasure to use. There are a set of easy to access large buttons that are located right under the screen. Even if you are stuck with spoon thumbs, using these keys is simple and fun! The QWERTY keyboard is easy to use as you can type out your text messages as well as emails faster than a normal keyboard will allow you to. Being slightly heavy at 124 g, the phone is quite difficult to be carried around as you cannot stash it away into the smallest purse or pocket.. At 16 mm, the phone is also quite thich. The battery life is fairly decent as the phone can last for a few days with moderate use. This is far more that you would expect for an entry level Smartphone.

The Nokia 6760 Slide has an internal memory of 120 MB which can be expanded up to 8 GB using the microSD memory card slot on the side of the phone. The Bluetooth of the Nokia 6760 Slide is quite useful as this allows you to transfer data across a short distance. The inbuilt GPS rounds off the features by giving the phone additional utility as well.

The phone looks really good with its black outer casing and red highlights. This makes the phone a good choice for anyone who wants to download music directly to the phone. Having 3G capability means that you can use the phone for video calling.

The TFT screen of the Motorola ROKR ZN50 can display up to 260000 colors making the display bright with vibrant colors when used to display your photos and videos. This touch screen is quite responsive and finger friendly.

If you want to transfer data across as short distance, you can use either the USB port or the inbuilt Bluetooth chip. The Bluetooth is sufficient to transfer a few small files. Playing music aloud is also a feasible option as the loud speakers are actually quite good.

The Motorola ROKR ZN50 has a 3.15 MP primary camera which can be used to capture photos even in dim light. Photo clarity is not top class but is pretty good for a music phone. Unfortunately videos recorded turn out to be very unclear as even the individual frames can be distinguished from one another! The WAP browser version 2.0 allows you to view full length web pages. The FM radio with RDS completes the media features of the Motorola ROKR ZN50 as it allows you to know the exact details about what you are listening to.

lg_gc990_louvreThe LG Louvre GC990 is one of the new phones set to be released by LG later this year. Blackberry Curve 8520- Class all the way!

August 24th, 2009

BlackBerry Curve 8520 smartphone_360The Blackberry Curve 8520 is one of the new classy smartphones to be launched this year. Commonly known as the “Gemini”, the Blackberry Curve 8520 is quite different from the other devices launched in the market. For one thing, the phone is actually cheaper when compared to other Blackberry devices making it affordable for a wider customer base. In spite of this, it actually looks more expensive than it actually is as you have an optical navigation key instead of the ugly trackball that most Blackberry devices seem to favor. With a width of less than 15 mm, the Blackberry Curve 8520 is also quite thin and can be slipped into a pocket without any problem. You will get an unsightly bulge if you carry it around in a small pocket, but this is something that most Blackberry users are probably used to by now.

As expected, the Blackberry Curve 8520 is very user friendly. Typing out messages using the full QWERTY keyboard is a treat as each and every key on the keyboard clicks down with a soft satisfying click. The hardware of the phone is top class as the body of the phone is strong and can withstand a few mild accidents with little to show for it! If you are a techie who loves to run many applications simultaneously, you will not be disappointed as the operating system can handle it. This device uses Blackberry OS 5.0.

The connectivity options of the phone are pretty good both long distance and short. Long distance connectivity options include class 10 GPRS, class 10 EDGE and Wi-Fi. The only surprising downside to the phone is the fact that you cannot use it to connect to 3G networks. You can transfer data across a short distance using the USB or the Bluetooth.

Toshiba TG01

August 9th, 2009

tg01The Toshiba TG01 is surely a serious contender for the trophy for best smartphone ever. Why? Just a cursory glance at the specifications sheet should reveal enough. Just look at the fields ‘Processor’, ‘Dimensions’ and ‘Screen’. The phone incorporates a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a super slim waist – line of a scarcely believable 9.9 mm and a massive 4.1 inch screen which is sure to make plenty of mouths water. The phone is sure to knock over the likes of the Nokia N97 and the Apple iPhone 3GS in its quest for supremacy in the smartphone market.

The most notable feature, as mentioned earlier, about the Toshiba TG01 is the dimensions of the phone. The phone is an amazing 9.9 mm and has a big screen, which explains the reason for the unusually big width of the phone. Due to these two factors, you might not feel extremely comfortable putting the phone in a tight jeans pocket as it might feel like it will break! However, the screen is absolutely great for watching movies on the go as well as to do some big – time web browsing.

The 3.2 megapixel snapper of the Toshiba TG01 is not really something to boast about. However, with a 3.2 megapixel camera, there shouldn’t be too much expectations of the camera. There are a couple of features such as autofocus, timer and a variety of resolutions, but one does feel that a camera at least like the iPhone 3GS would’ve been greatly appreciated. However, the lack of a flash is a slight disadvantage, but that won’t be a big deal if you are occasionally going to take pictures. Video playback is quite good on the phone, largely due to the massive screen.

The phone has already been made available since June earlier this year and can be obtained on contracts.
